The NC Peoples’ Coalition for Giving was a multi-cultural statewide network of people of color that amplified the wealth and power of giving, in all its forms, by people and communities of color.
The Coalition was established in 2005 with a five-year time horizon designed to catalyze conversations and connections across the state. It ceased operations as planned in June 2010.
The attached Overview describes the work and aspirations of the Coalition.

Authentic Relationships
The Coalition was grounded in a commitment to cultivating “authentic relationships.” We paid attention to process and intentionally reflected diversity in racial/ethnic identity, geography, and role. We described what we meant by “authentic relationships” in a Philanthropy Journal article.

Dialogue Circles
When Zulayka Santiago joined the Coalition team in 2008 as Organizer and Co-Manager, she launched a series of dialogue circles – casual conversations of 8-10 people over great food. In addition to helping foster authentic relationships, dialogue circles helped us share and capture our own stories of giving – inciting a personal transformation and a reclamation of philanthropy for people of color in North Carolina.
This simple and powerful model anchored the Coalition’s efforts to educate and empower givers of color. This process culminated with a gathering in Greensboro in October 2009. We shared the following publication, which included guidelines for convening a dialogue circle as well as excerpts and photos from various circles.

The Philanthropy Journal featured one of the Coalition’s Dialogue Circle co-hosts, Elena Gonzalez.

Statewide Convenings
Additionally, the Coalition convened statewide gatherings periodically to connect participants from local Dialogue Circles, to explore provocative topics in greater depth, or to interact with national leaders. The following notes capture some of the learnings from various statewide convenings.
Gatekeeping – Feb2008
Organic Philanthropy – April2008
New Dialogue on Race – Oct2008
In 2009, Coalition Co-Manager Gita Gulati-Partee led a series of trainings on structural racism and philanthropy. This series anchored the Coalition’s efforts to hold institutions of giving accountable to communities of color. The following resource organizations contributed to the curriculum and design, either directly or indirectly.
Aspen Institute Roundtable on Community Change

The Coalition would not have come to life without the support and partnership of NCGives.
Special thanks to Organizer Zulayka Santiago, founding Co-Manager Stephanie Walker, Advisory Council Members – Andrea Arias, Donna Chavis, Ilana Dubester, Beverley Francis, Sterling Freeman, Natasha Gore, Melissa Johnson, Charlene Martin, Ajulo Othow-Norman, Barbara Roole – and all of our collaborators.
While the Coalition has come to a close, the work continues. Together, we can shift and build power to enable a more just, equitable, and impactful distribution of resources from and to communities of color.
